ERIC CLAPTON: One More Car, One More Rider (320kpbs-2xCDs)

Eric Clapton's first live album since 1992's zeitgeist-capturing Unplugged, is, as one would expect, full of well-tailored highlights from his back-catalog of bristly, well-kept blues. Recorded in Los Angeles and Tokyo during his 2001 world tour, and featuring the accompaniment from the likes of Andy Fairweather-Low and Billy Preston, it's an album that serves to satisfy both Clapton purists (there's a four-song sequence of tracks from Pilgrim, shorn of their original anodyne synthesizer embellishments) and adult pop fans who prefer their blues from the decanter rather than the bottle ("Tears in Heaven," a sublime "Bell Bottom Blues," a rather poised, applause-riddled "Layla"). One More Car is an engaging live document that finds EC far from asleep at the wheel. --Kevin Maidment

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND: (1994) Where It All Begins

The popular aphorism that "there are no second acts in America" has been contradicted by the surprising reincarnation of the Allman Brothers Band after highway deaths, drug trials and artistic lethargy hammered more than one nail in the group's coffin. After breaking up in '81, the four surviving original members, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, reunited for a 20th anniversary tour in 1989. The results were so unexpectedly good that the band decided to stick together and have released their fourth post-reunion album, Where It All Began. Why did the Allmans' reunion succeed where so many rock and roll reunions have flopped? The Allmans' concept hasn't changed, but like the jazz and blues legends they admire, they play a little differently each time. --Geoffrey Himes

BUDDY GUY: (1980) Breaking Out (JSP)

The classic 1980 Chicago studio set newly (1996) re-mixed from the original session tapes. Two extra tracks added from the first Phil Guy session featuring Buddy Guy on guitar. Buddy Guy has today carved out a super successful niche for himself as the flagship artist of the contemporary, international blues scene. The most creative, intense and in every sense just the very best guitarist who ever walked this earth. Back in the period 1979 to 1981 he cut three definitive albums for JSP Records and this is the middle one. Sandwiched between two classic, 'straight blues' sessions of intense power this is a forward looking, raging session with some absolutely stunning guitar playing and 'at the edge' singing. Major music from an absolutely major figure in the most important musical genre created since sound recording was invented - the blues, a music that is not the 'roots' of anything or something musicians 'go through' on the way to something else but is the ultimate musical artistic flowering of the twentieth century. And like this album, damn good listening too..... by John Stedman,on CD.

Tracks:
1. Have You Ever Been Lonesome
2. You Can Make It If You Try
3. Break Out All Over You
4. She Winked Her Eye
5. I Didn't Know My Mother Had a Son Like Me
6. Boogie Family Style
7. You Called Me in My Dream
8. Me & My Guitar
9. Ice Around My Heart
10. Texas Flood
